Join the 3RsC Board of Directors

The 3Rs Collaborative is recruiting individuals for Secretary and 1-3 General Board Members to join our team beginning in January of 2027. Board meetings are held virtually for 2 hours, 6 times a year and committee meetings are held in coordination with full board meetings.


Our Board of Directors is made up of ten to sixteen people consisting of 6 Officers (i.e., President, Past President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer) and 5 to 11 additional Directors. Directors are elected by the current board members. 


Executive Team Members

The 3Rs Collaborative is recruiting for a new Secretary to join our executive team beginning in January of 2027. Priority will be given to individuals who have previously served on the 3RsC’s board of directors.


Applications for Secretary are due October 1, 2026. Selected individuals will be notified by November 10, 2026. See below for responsibilities and evaluation criteria of general board members.


Secretary 


As part of the 3RsC’s executive team, the Secretary ensures accurate record-keeping to preserve the historical memory and knowledge to the organization. Specific responsibilities include: 

  • Take minutes during the board meeting including noting attendance, votes, and key action items. 
  • Ensure the safety and accuracy of all records of board meetings. 
  • Assume responsibilities of the president if the vice president, president, and past president are all absent. 
  • Ensuring that the organizational bylaws are followed at board meetings. 
  • Leading any reviews of the organizational bylaws, as needed. 
  • Mentor the incoming secretary during the first year of their term 


Secretary Board Terms

The 3RsC’s Secretary will each serve for a 3-year term. Board meetings will be 6 times a year. 

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about the success of 3RsC to provide leadership above and beyond board service. The selected individuals in these roles should be experienced leaders in industry, academia, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. 


Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications: 

  • Prior membership on the 3RsC’s board of directors or significant contribution to initiatives (preferred) 
  • Commitment to the 3RsC's mission, values, and goals. 
  • Relevant scientific skills, expertise, education, and experience. If possible, evidenced with an excellent track record of conducting high-quality research. 
  • A good understanding of the use of animals in research and a commitment to the development of all 3Rs. 
  • An understanding of the priorities, challenges, and opportunities for the 3Rs across the biosciences sector. 
  • Ability to exercise judgment across a broad range of policy, strategic, and research issues. 
  • A strong strategic perspective and ability to tackle issues outside of their immediate area of expertise. 
  • Understanding of and willingness to fulfill fiduciary responsibilities. 
  • Interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Availability and commitment to attending executive team and board meetings.

General Board Members

Applications for General Board Members are due November 1, 2026. Selected individuals will be notified by December 15, 2026. See below for responsibilities and evaluation criteria of general board members.


Responsibilities

  • Provide financial & legal oversight/responsibility of the organization (e.g., approving the annual budget & reviewing financials) 
  • Actively contribute to the health and well-being of 3RsC in multiple ways including actively participating in regular board meetings (held virtually 6 times a year) + any additional ad hoc meetings 
  • Advise on the organization’s strategy, mission, goals, and major spending decisions 
  • Actively contribute to the organization’s mission and goals such as being directly involved in current initiatives 
  • Assist in fundraising/resource gathering efforts such as connecting staff to professional contacts, directly advocating for financial institutional support of 3RsC, and making a reasonable personal donation 
  • Advocate for 3RsC within the scientific community & general public 
  • Actively participate in at least one 3RsC committee or initiative 


Evaluation Criteria

Candidates will be evaluated based on the following criteria: 

  • Commitment to the 3RsC’s mission, values, and goals. 
  • Relevant scientific skills, expertise, education, and experience. If possible, evidenced with an excellent track record of conducting high-quality research.

Candidates will be further evaluated by the below criteria: 

  • Scientific ‘fit’ for the vacancy 
  • Breadth of knowledge 
  • Demonstrable understanding/commitment to the 3Rs 
  • Appropriate level of experience including any previous experience as a member of a 3RsC initiative 
  • Location – the majority of the 3RsC board should be located in the US 
  • Sector – the 3RsC board aims to be balanced across academic, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical & agrochemical sectors 
  • Experience & Focus – the 3RsC board aims to be balanced across expertise between in vivo and in vitro technology, 3Rs focus, and general specialty (e.g., behavioral/social science, biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering, education, medical/dental/veterinary professionals) 
  • Board members seeking re-election will undergo the same evaluation process as new candidates with their contributions and commitment during their previous term(s) also being considered during re-election.

Term

Directors serve a term of three years and until the respective successors are elected.
